The Independent published an insightful article on 𝐃𝐣𝐢𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐢’𝐬 𝐒𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, first of its kind on the continent, a pioneering model that could pave the way for other African countries.

As the continent most exposed to climate change, 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝟑% 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞.
Meanwhile, international aid is becoming increasingly scarce, and the climate reparations funds promised by the Global North, conference after conference, are still yet to materialize, while the continent’s populations face the daily consequences of climate change.
Mirroring the European Union carbon scheme (EU ETS), Djibouti applies the polluter-pays principle to maritime and aviation emissions.
With generated revenues the country can finance emergency programs, climate adaptation programs and national ecological transition.
